Lieutenant Commander Michael Thompson, a native of Southington, Connecticut, enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1999. His first assignment was at a multi-mission small boat unit, Station Rockland, Maine, from 1999-2002, where he deployed to New York City and Boston in response to the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001.  

He completed the Airman program at Air Station Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and graduated from the Aviation Maintenance Technician “A” School at Aviation Technical Training Center, Elizabeth City, North Carolina in 2003. His aviation tours included Coast Guard Air Station Humboldt Bay, California and Coast Guard Air Station Borinquen, Puerto Rico, spanning the years from 2003 to 2010. He was selected for and graduated from the Coast Guard’s Officer Candidate School in 2010.

Upon commissioning, he was assigned to Sector Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan, where he served as the Assistant Chief of the Incident Management Division from 2010 to 2014. His next assignment was as the Assistant Command Center School Chief at Training Center Yorktown, Virginia from 2014 – 2018, where he managed policy-derived curriculum. Additionally, he served as a Standardization Team Leader, facilitating biennial assessments of Coast Guard Command Centers.  

Most recently, Lieutenant Commander Thompson served as the Joint Harbor Operations Center Chief at Sector San Diego, California. He directed multi-mission responses to Coast Guard missions and inter-agency operations along the Nation’s southwest maritime border and across a dynamic 140,000 square mile, 4-state area of responsibility.

Lieutenant Commander Thompson’s personal awards include an Air Medal, four Coast Guard Commendation Medals, the D.O.T. 9-11 Coast Guard Medal, five Coast Guard Achievement Medals, and various other unit and service awards including the Advanced Boat Forces Insignia and Aircrew Wings.

Lieutenant Commander Thompson is married to his best friend Chrissy (Bickford) and together they are the proud parents of two children, Riley (16) and Alison (10). Their family is rounded out with their sweet dog Luna.
