In his final interview before retirement, Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Charles Michel reflects on what he would tell someone considering joining the #USCG today: "I would tell them to do it. The Coast Guard is a great service and something you can be proud of for the rest of your life. It is an adventure and you will serve our Nation with some of the best people in America. It is founded on the principles of Honor, Respect and Devotion to Duty. And I would say if those core values are important to you - then join. Right away."

When things are going right there is nobody more popular on the college campus than the student-athlete, the gifted cadet who can sink a basket or get that vital first down. Even better is the athlete who can step into the classroom and hold their own against cadets who do not have extracurricular commitments. On Thursday, May 24th, the 30th Vice Commandant of the #USCG, Adm. Charles Michel, will retire after 33 years of Service to Nation. Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Charles Michel on his thoughts on leadership: "My goal is to be collaborative, to bring stakeholders to the table, to participate on the process and to be inclusive. I like to create predicable governance structure, which match expectations and gets people invested in the process. I strive to provide them with as much responsibility and freedom that they can handle."

In August of 2015, Vice Commandant of the Coast Guard Adm. Charles Michel assumed the duties of the 30th Vice Commandant of the #USCG. Then in May 2016, he became the first Coast Guard four-star Vice Commandant and first four-star Judge Advocate. Michel reflects on this groundbreaking assignment as he concludes 33 years of Service to Nation. "The promotion of the position of Vice Commandant to Admiral, to get the 4th star, is good for the service and it is a tremendous step towards the modernization and professionalism of the Coast Guard. It was the right thing to do as it adds tremendous gravity to the position as an advocate, both nationally and internationally, for the service."
